Clean up a Downloads folder full of saved pictures
Saving pictures from the browser for years turns Downloads into a pile of images, zips and installers. A simple order to pull the pictures out, give them one home, and sort them so you can find things again.
How Downloads turns into a picture dump
Every "save image" in the browser lands in Downloads by default. So do zip packs, PDFs and installers. After a few years the folder holds thousands of files with names like 1695.jpg, image (12).png and F8sKx2.webp, and opening it takes a while.

You do not need to sort it all by hand. The trick is to separate the pictures first and only then organize them.
Step 1: pull the pictures out
- Open Downloads in File Explorer.
- In the search box, type
kind:=picture. Only images are shown. - Select all (Ctrl+A) and move them to a new folder, for example
D:\Pictures\From downloads.
Zip packs from creator sites often hold more pictures. Extract them into the same new folder so everything is in one place.
Step 2: give your pictures one home
Scattered pictures are the real reason a collection feels impossible. Downloads, Desktop, Pictures and old backups often hold parts of the same collection.
- Choose one home folder, ideally on a drive other than C.
- Move every picture folder there.
- Set your browser to save into an "inbox" folder next to it, so new pictures always arrive in one known place.
Step 3: sort what is now in one place
With everything in one home, sorting becomes a single job instead of an endless one.
- By hand: make folders per series or character and drag. Fine for a few hundred pictures.
- With tags: Hydrus or Eagle, if you already enjoy tagging.
- Automatically: a content sorter such as Art Sorter groups pictures by character and scene, keeps series in order and sets copies aside.
Step 4: keep it from happening again
- Empty the inbox folder into the collection once a week or once a month.
- Run the sorter on the new arrivals; Art Sorter can add new pictures to an existing sorted folder and re-sort everything together.
Questions
Is it safe to move pictures out of Downloads? Yes. Downloads is just a folder; nothing depends on pictures staying there.
What about the other files? Installers you have already used can usually go. Keep receipts and documents in their own folder.
Can I try Art Sorter on part of it first? Yes. Up to 300 pictures are free. It does not delete anything; copies go to a separate folder for you to check.
